Greetings, WAAC members,
A big thank you goes out to all of our exhibiting
members, volunteers, staff and long-suffering
spouses (of exhibiting members) who participated in
the 2010 Art Fair Off the Square.
Judging by the survey results, (see Page 3)it was a successful show, better
for some than others, but well-attended and people were buying.
We were excited by some of the changes we made this year,
including our new Art Fair Director, Bill Bale, who did an
excellent job in his first year in this role.
We also had a new Information Booth with a new, more
festive look; larger and more accessible, it appeared to be
successful as well, judging by the large number of folks who
stopped in to ask questions.
JoAnne Hauser Warren was our featured artist and her work
looked great on our t-shirts, postcards and poster; thanks, JoAnne!
Thanks, as always, to Clarence Cameron. Clarence is our
unofficial WAAC photographer and, thanks to his efforts,
we have a photographic history of our show throughout
the years, including this year’s award winners.
Responding to our artist surveys, in
the “why we don’t do that” category,
I’ll endeavor to answer some of your
questions and concerns.
We don’t have a banner across the
front of the show because of a city
ordinance banning them (this after an
incident involving a banner on State Street that came down in high winds
and brought a light post with it, almost hitting a pedestrian). We
have a new banner on the front of our
info booth now that is large and
colorful and will make that booth bright
and noticeable as our entry to the show.
Despite repeated requests for more
beer at the picnic, we have to be aware
of our liability so we try to provide a
modicum of refreshment without
having concerns about overconsumption.
Some of you have noted that the show
layout is somewhat confusing on the
Municipal Building side of the show.
We have looked at our show layout
repeatedly and due to the large
number of immoveable obstacles in
that area (trees, planters, barricades,
etc.) there just is not a better way to do
the layout without cutting out a large
number of booths. As we have opted
to provide exhibit space for as many
members as we can, this is the best
layout given the space provided. We
will continue to try and channel the
fairgoers to all sections of the show.
As always we will look at all of your
comments and try to incorporate your
good suggestions for next year!
Thanks again for your participation
and volunteerism, we wouldn’t exist
without all of you.
Dawn Dark Mountain, WAAC President

Robert W. "Buffalo Bob" Giese, age 83, of Madison, passed away peacefully with grace and dignity on Wednesday, June 30, 2010, at HospiceCare in Fitchburg.
Bob had his own commercial art studio for many years and also exhibited fine art at shows and galleries nationally. He was one of the charter members of the Art Fair Off the Square and served as the first full-term president of WAAC as well as later terms. With his graphics skills, Bob produced the first professional-looking program, postcard, and poster for the fair, and designed the official Art Fair Off the Square t-shirt for many years as well as continuing to design the print materials. He was truly dedicated to the organization and, because of his graphic design and advertising connections, he obtained a great deal of free advertising for the fairs. He was truly one of the individuals who got the fair off the ground.
A memorial service, led by the Rev. Michael Schuler, will be celebrated at FIRST UNITARIAN SOCIETY, Landmark Auditorium, 900 University Ave., at 4:30 p.m., Tuesday July 6, 2010. There will be a reception immediately following the service. In lieu of flowers, memorials are suggested to HospiceCare, Inc, 5395 E. Cheryl Parkway, Fitchburg, WI 53711 or WAAC, P.O. Box 1791, Madison, WI 53701. Send a card to his wife, Marian at 6205 Mineral Point Road, #804, Madison, WI 53717
